A Keyword Epiphany – Of Sorts
I’ve built several websites from scratch that got to the front page of Google in 2 or 3 weeks. I believe I accomplished that because at least one page of the site had 90% or more of all the relevant keyword phrases that appeared on the actual web pages that were in Positions 1-10 of Google for the keyword phrase I was writing around.
I added content to most of those sites over time that was interesting and informative, for the most part, without a great deal of emphasis on implementing a specific keyword strategy. Although the sites made some money they usually fell short of my expectations – or I should say “my hopes” – because it’s only been recently that I realized that I had no rational reason to have legitimate expectations.
That was the epiphany for me. It may be difficult to wrap your mind around the thinking process (it was for me), but I stopped making websites qua websites and started building keyword equity. The website itself was only the wrapper in which I could place the keywords that I wanted to target.
One way to get it is to stop thinking of how much money you can make with a website, and start thinking about much you can make with a specific keyword phrase.
I will write more about the process that goes behind selecting a keyword phrase but the most important “new thing” to me was actually counting the backlinks of the competitors’ sites and determining exactly how many backlinks I needed to get for my keyword phrase to rank higher in organic search.
My usual strategy had been to write an article or two for Ezine Articles and let it build by itself. As it turns out that kind of strategy is more hope-changey than substantive. The exact steps I took to supercharge my article marketing is a topic for another discussion which I will get to.
Step 1 for me is to first determine how many backlinks I will need to get to #1 – #3 on Google for a particular keyword phrase. Unless you know that you can waste your time and resources assaulting a fortress that you will never crack.
This is the tool I use for backlinks analysis. Watch the video and you will see what I mean.
